Sanford is known for the academic opportunities it gives its students.

The city serves 3600 students, in five elementary schools, a junior high and a high school. Sanford High School has approximately 1300 students and is among the largest high schools in the state. The high school also includes Sanford Regional Technical Center, and an alternative school for grades 9-12.

The school systems prides itself on the academic environment it provides and the results it sees. All efforts are made to offer every student the chance to enjoy success, and to carry that forward beyond graduation. Many of the high school's graduating students attend college and achieve professional success. A testament to the quality of life in Sanford is the fact that many of these graduates return here to work and live.

The high school is also known for the championship athletic teams it produces, in the state's Class A leagues. The city is extremely supportive of its athletes, and high school games are always well attended.

Sanford is home to Seacoast Career School, which offers a variety of certification programs, and the York County Community College is just 20 minutes away in Wells. Distance learning in the University of Maine system is available at the Anderson Learning Center in Springvale.

Sanford is 45 minutes from the University of New England in Biddeford and the University of Maine in Portland, and 60 minutes from the University of New Hampshire. It's only two hours to Boston-area colleges.  It is also within easy reach of York County Community College, only 15 minutes away.  YCCC's Precision Machining Technology program, new in 2013, is located right here in Sanford.
