The region's public schools, are locally administered and funded, with significant administrative direction, standards setting and subsidies provided by the state. The state has recently mandated administrative consolidation of school districts that serve many small communities. In the Sanford Region larger communities such as Sanford, Wells and Kennebunk, form the core of a school district each with their own High Schools and Junior High Schools.

Student performance as measured by required state examination is driven by the demographic character of each school district. All schools within the region meet or exceed state standards and regularly matriculate graduates to among the best colleges and universities in the country. Maine has always ranked high in SAT scores, graduation rates and other educational benchmarks. The Sanford Region's schools are among its greatest assets, as many new residents will attest.
