Workforce Regions

The Sanford Region enjoys a productive and skilled workforce of close to 35,000.  Moreover, located at the Heart of York County, Sanford is easily accessible to most of York County ‘s labor Market (approx. 110,000 workers) and much of  adjacent Cumberland County and New Hampshire’s Stafford and Rockingham Counties - all adding up to a labor force of over 240,000 workers within a 45 minute drive.  In addition, the region  is a net job exporter, allowing access to  a potential  additional reservoir of workers. The Sanford Region has traditionally  experienced a higher unemployment rate than both Maine and York County averages,  largely a result of the high core unemployment in the City of Sanford’s  central district, precipitated by the exodus of  large scale manufacturing  and exacerbated by the economic collapse in 2008-09.  Even so, the region has endured the hard times and remains  better off than less diversified regions with lower worker productivity.

Moreover, despite  the current economic climate and the legacy of plant closings  and job export, the region remains  poised to integrate new industry and businesses from across the economic spectrum.  We have a large workforce who pride themselves with  a strong work ethic, and who enjoy the benefits  of living in an ideal location.  This confluence is unusual and allows the Sanford Region to offer an extraordinary combination of business opportunity and a lifestyle that can’t be beat.
